Garbage plastic bags are under high surveillance in Switzerland. Here, sold at the Post Office, these are the official garbage bags you HAVE to use if you live in Zurich or risk a heavy penalty.

There is a special video camera set just to monitor them. I really wonder if this is cost efficient :-) ... Ah, I forgot the penalty can finance the camera, the recording, the monitoring, the identification, the pursuit and of course the penalty collection.

Ok, I didn't cut anyone's arm.
This is one of the exhibits from www.koerperwelten.de in Zürich or, in English: www.bodyworlds.com. These are the blood vessels in a human arm. The way this "sculpture" was made is quite interesting. Some kind of liquid plastic has been poured into vessels then solidified. Everything around has been removed hence revealing this accuracy never reached before. The feeling I got from visiting this very controversial exhibition is the amazement from the perfection of the human body and how important it is to take excellent care of it.

Searching for "tiananmen": average worldwide traffic in the last 30 days

As a follow up on my previous post, here is a graph from Google Trends showing the popularity of the query for the word "tiananmen" in the last 30 days and from where they were run. Notice the cities. If some hackers really wanted to know more about Chinese dissidents, they encouraged, as an result, even more Chinese citizens to be curious about what is censored. The volume of queries is still today higher than before the hacking and it will probably remain as such for a while. See current results.

According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington recently was faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom.

That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.

Every night, the maintenance man would remove them and the next day, the girls would put them back. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night.

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

I think announcing this ambitious project is a major news for technology. It's also a call for help to finally have an OS adapted to the Web and not the other way around.

Personal genetics, Parkinson's and Sergey Brin

With a simple blog entry Sergey Brin is announcing he has a "markedly higher chance of developing Parkinson's in [his] lifetime than the average person". He learned about it from genome analysis results by the company 23andme his wife co-founded -- I've posted here a video of her describing how 23andme works. This is unfortunate to him.

Most likely this post will raise awareness about 23andme, illustrating exactly what its purpose is: informing you about your genome and sharing this information with others. As a result, you can better share prevention tips and encourage funding research for a cure. To some extend, by making public a very private matter, Sergey Brin is showing to the world someone should not be afraid of doing so and would actually benefit from it.

The price for personal genetics is now $399. It was $999 earlier this year.

I've run a quick test of cuil and run into these few issues:

Searching for "stephilix" returned the first time a trace call error, most likely due to the heavy load the site currently has following its announcement. Then I got 8 results: one is about an obsolete link to this blog and the other 7 do seem relevant. I got many "No results because of high load..." errors.

Sometime, info company pages failed with page load errors or "Oops! We couldn’t find that page." also most likely due to high load.

Trying this search, I'm supposed to get "50 results for hannover capital mortgage", but only one is displayed. Google claims about 24800 results for the same query.

I do like the "extended" results presented in multiple tabs with the "more" option, as seen above.

Now this is useful! Check out the Amazon Kindle. You can read books, magazines, newspapers, blogs and Wikipedia.org on a larger display than a mobile phone's one without the monthly fee. This device has a lot of potential. Since there is an Internet connection, can we browse other sites (i.e iGoogle, Google Maps, Apps)? Is this possible? If so, add a color display and it becomes serious competition to the iPhone. It could be used as a digital frame as well (for pictures, announcements, forecasts, results). For a reading experience, it would only lack the smell of old paper accompanying last century's books.
